Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
