Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
