A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
